The Artist/Metaphysician and his Screenwriter Mother
I think you know who the Artist is here. Yours truly. Metaphysician is a kind of loose term that would refer to my fascination with the visible and the non visible and how they are inseparable. The dance between the solid and the ephemeral. And yes I had a screenwriter Mother. And my Father was an actor who also wrote with my Mother. It was normal to see Mom walking around the house mumbling dialogue between characters in a story she was creating, as the dishes piled up in the kitchen sink! It was part of daily life at home for an actress or director or producer to drop by for a visit. Life at home was loaded with theatricality and story telling, and as a little boy I soaked up every bit of it. And this was in the 1950’s, The golden era. We lived in Encino Ca. which was kind of an enchanted village with movie people everywhere. John Wayne lived four blocks from us, Clark Gable lived a little ways down the road. Oh the stories I could tell! It would be a whole book in itself. It was an enchanted Time and place.
Even with that upbringing I took a different path. I became a painter. I think that many things from our early life can remain dormant for a very long time and then blossom hugely years later. This is what happened to me about twenty years ago. Without consciously trying to do it, characters emerged on their own. Very theatrical characters. They looked very much like a living theatre. They seemed to exude an endless number of storylines. Here is one such character

I’ve had a thought for years which is this. Big natural systems are are so delicately built and connected together but contain such amazing power. Delicacy and power. A wonderful way to think of Art. A wonderful way to view a lot of things. So then I thought of these breakthrough paintings as big trees solidly rooted with beautifully nuanced branches with leaves everywhere. In my last post I talked about the hundreds of drawings I’ve in the last four years. They are the leaves the big trees keep giving off filled with stories that seem to grow right out of the paper! They have seeds in them that may grow into more big trees. Instead of mumbling the dialogue of characters like Mom used to do I mumble silently with my materials! The seeds of new characters and new stories emerge. You will see more of these Drawings/leaves in upcoming posts. They are forming in my mind as a one of a kind E-book. here’s a hint and a question. Can a kind cosmic comics, merge and become one with classical art?
Stay tuned Much more will be revealed!
